EU-AFRICA SUMMIT 2017

This year, the fifth EU-Africa summit will take place on 29-30 November 2017 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Under the central theme "Investing in youth for a sustainable future", African and European Heads of State and Government will gather together with the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, the President of the African Union and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

They will meet to renew their EU-Africa Partnership, adopt a joint declaration and joint commitments at implementation level. The participants will also talk over the progress achieved within the framework of the 2014-2017 action plan adopted during the previous EU-Africa Summit.

Traditionally, the Summits of EU (European Union) and AU (African Union) Heads of States and Governments take place every three years alternately in Africa and Europe. These Summits take stock of the progress made in the implementation of commitments and provide political guidance for further work. The fourth (most recent) EU-Africa Summit took place in April 2014 in Brussels, Belgium. In November 2010, the third EU-Africa Summit took place in Tripoli, Libya.

This EU-Africa summit will be a key moment to strengthen political and economic ties between the two continents, to provide political guidance in order to address current challenges, and an opportunity for African and European leaders to reshape and deepen the EU-Africa partnership, launched in 2007 with the adoption of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES). 2017 is a defining year for EU-Africa relations as it has been ten years since the adoption of the JAES.

At the summit, African and EU leaders will discuss the future of EU-Africa relations, while focusing on investing in youth. Other priorities of the EU-Africa partnership will be discussed during the summit. These will include:

● peace and security

● governance including democracy, human rights, migration and mobility

● investment and trade

● skills development

● job creation
